Cosino: the quick prototyping embedded system

Cosino is a real hardware gym for quick prototyping. One unique tool that combines the functionalities of a mini-computer with those of a professional automation system. All in one product: with its countless peripherals it’s capable of handling any type of invention.

The Cosino Project is a comprehensive lineup of CPUs boards, carrier boards (named extensions) and several peripherals all designed for industrial environment and released with full driver and documentation support!

Designed to make industry devices all Cosino Project’s boards can also be used by students and/or makers whose like developing new electronic devices just focusing their efforts on The-Idea(TM) and forgetting about searching for drivers, supported hardwares and so on.

But the real innovation of Cosino Projects is that once a prototype is running a developer can ask to HCE Engineering (the project inventors) how its project can be turned into a real product with proper certifications, case and whatever is needed to be placed on the market! 🙂

Basically Cosino is a CPU module based on Atmel AT91sam9G35 with 128MB RAM, 256MB NAND that can be connected to an extension board through anti-shock and anti-vibration connectors especially designed for industrial certifications.

As first extension Cosino’s inventors propose the Mega 2560, a fully Arduino Mega 2560 compatible board (Atmel ATmega2560 MCU) connected to a GNU/Linux system running a Debian/ARM Wheezy.

The Cosino CPU module inserted into a Mega 2560 extension turns into Cosino Mega 2560 KIT that can be used to extend Arduino Mega 2560 based projects without modifying the code and by using all Arduino’s shields as is! With a Cosino Mega 2560 developers have:

  • 1x Ethernet 10/100
  • 1x USB Host 2.0
  • 1x USB Host 1.1
  • 1x USB Host/Device 2.0
  • 1x microSD
  • 1x RS232
  • 1x RS485
  • 1x realtime clock
  • 1x I2C
  • 2x SPI
  • 1x Wifi (optional)
  • 1x LCD (optional)

Also on the Cosino’s site a RFID reader, a smartcard reader and several MODBUS clients (all tested and well documented) are available and more peripheral are going to be added soon!
